Guwahati: Malaysia’s world 63rd-ranked player, Cheam June Wei, displayed courage by triumphing over the 4th seed, Chi Yu Jen from Chinese Taipei, who recently secured the Syed Modi International title last Sunday. On Wednesday, Cheam secured a victory with a scoreline of 21-19, 7-21, 21-13, propelling him into the third round of the Guwahati Masters.
This win sets up a third-round encounter for Cheam against India’s Subhankar Dey. The victory also serves as sweet revenge for Cheam, avenging his previous loss to Chi in the round of 16 during last week’s Syed Modi International.
The 19-year-old Justin Hoh also defeated Indian player Varun Kapur 18-21, 21-16, 21-9 on Wednesday to face another Indian player and No. 7 seed Mithun Manjunath next.
Meanwhile, Malaysia team has successfully advanced with four men’s pairs and three mixed doubles pairs progressing to the next rounds.
The Syed Modi champions from last week, Choong Hon Jian and Muhammad Haikal, are scheduled to face Denmark’s William Kryger Boe and Christian Faust Kjær.
