Bangkok: Malaysia’s World No. 15 men’s doubles pair Teo Ee Yi/Ong Yew Sin needed their experience and a bit of luck to overcome World No. 128 Nipitphon Phuangphuapet/Tanupat Viriyangkura of Thailand at the Toyota Thailand Open on Tuesday.

Teo/Ong were pushed the distance in the opening round after dropping the first game 19-21. They managed to dominate the second set by winning the game 21-13.

The Malaysian duo was trailing 6-10 in the decider but seemed to have gotten themselves back on track when they took the lead by 16-15, before claiming the third-set 21-19. They will meet Mathias Christiansen/Niclas Nohr of Denmark on Thursday.

On the other hand, last week’s YONEX Thailand Open runners-up, Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong also entered the second round of the Toyota Thai Open Toyota after only playing for four minutes.

This was because their South Korean opponents Kim Gi Jung/Lee Yong Dae withdrew from the match at 6-2 in the first set due to injury on Lee Yong-Dae’s left leg.

Goh/Tan will meet Supak Jomkoh/Kittinupong Kedren of Thailand in the second round.

The Thai pair advanced after beating another Malaysian pair, Goh Sze Fei/Nur Izzuddin 13-21, 21-13, 21-17.

Also cruising into the second round were the eighth-seeded Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik, who beat the Thai pair Weeraphat Phakjarung/Wongsathorn Thongkham 21-10, 21-18 in 32 minutes. Chia/Soh will play Indonesia’s 2019 world junior champions Leo Rolly Carnando/Daniel Marthin next.

In women’s doubles, Vivian Hoo/Yap Cheng Wen also made the second round after outlasting England’s Chloe Birch/Lauren Smith 21-14, 21-14 in 34 minutes.

Hoo/Yap are scheduled to meet French pair Emilie Lefel/Anne Tran on Thursday.
