Copenhagen: Former World No. 1 men’s doubles pair, Mathias Boe/Carsten Mogensen of Denmark will end their 15-year partnership after the 2019 All England tournament.
The 2019 All England Open is one of the most prestigious badminton tournament in the world, will be held in Birmingham from March 6 to March 10. All eyes will be on the two-time All-England champions (2011, 2015) who will kick off their All England opener against Choi Solgyu/Seo Seung Jae of South Korea next Wednesday.
Mathias Boe, who will celebrate his 39th birthday on July 11th of 2019, posted on their social media last Thursday with the following message:
“After 15 amazing years together time has come to try new partnerships. All England will be our last tournament together. Thank you for all the love and support, we are so thankful:-).”
Both Boe and Mogensen would not retire from badminton after their split-up. On the contrary, each of them will be paired with a younger partner.
Carsten Mogensen (35 years old) has been registered in the Singapore Open with Mads Pieler Kolding (31 years old), while Mathias Boe will partner with Mads Conrad Petersen (31 years old) in future tournaments.
The top men’s doubles pair from Denmark had enjoyed a remarkable career during the Superseries era where they’ve won 16 Superseries titles including two All England and three Superseries Finals and 14 runners-up. Their split-up also marked the end of a golden era in men’s doubles badminton.
In addition, they also won the 2016 Thomas Cup, 2015 European Games, European Championships (2012, 2017), and the European Men’s Team (2006,2008,2010,2012,2014,2016).
However, the Danish pair was defeated by Fu Haifeng/Cai Yun of China in the 2012 Olympics final, and lost to Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia in the 2013 World Championships final.
