Copenhagen: Obviously, Viktor Axelsen’s performance in 2017 had a huge impact on the entire Denmark.

Not only that he won three Super Series titles (India, Japan, and China Open) and the BWF Super Series Finals, winning the men’s singles title at World Championships helped cemented his status as one of the biggest stars in the sport of badminton.

On January 6th, 2018, Axelsen topped the poll ahead of other popular shortlisted nominees including Caroline Wozniacki (women’s tennis), Christian Eriksen (men’s football), the Denmark’s women’s national football team, Pernille Blume (swimming) and Jakob Fuglsang (cycling) where all have enjoyed a solid 2017, to win Denmark’s Sportsperson of the year and the Celebration of the year awards.

“2017 has really been a year with many great Danish sports performances. In our view, however, Viktor Axelsen’s World Championship gold medal performance stood out the most, “says Thomas Holm, a press officer from NordicBet.

In addition to the two awards above, Axelsen also took home the most prestigious award of the night, the BT Gold.

BT Gold is the oldest and finest awards in Danish sport, powered by the newspaper BT and it let the athletes to vote for the winner themselves. The newspaper BT has awarded the award since 1930, and Viktor Axelsen was the 88th recipient of the award.
