The judge sentenced Jonathon Best, 52, from west London to 10 weeks in prison at Willesden magistrates court on Tuesday.

He pleaded guilty to sending by public communication network a grossly offensive or indecent or obscene or menacing message.

Elaine Cousins, from the Crown Prosecution Service, told PA Media:

“Jonathon Best took to Facebook to live stream a barrage of racist abuse at the three players who missed penalties during the game.

“He used social media to publicly vilify these three young men who tried to score for England. When approached by a Facebook friend asking him to remove the grossly offensive content, Best replied: ‘It’s my profile, I can do what I want.’

“There is absolutely no room in the game, nor elsewhere, for racism. The CPS is committed to bringing perpetrators of hate crime to justice where there is the evidence to do so.”

The abuse took place after the Euro 2020 final this summer. Best used social media to insult the players after they missed the final three penalties. This led to the Three Lions losing the final.

The court heard that the individual, who was a work colleague and Facebook friend of Best’s, reported the 18-second Facebook video. The friend made the report to the social media platform and the police after Best refused to remove it.

Facebook eventually took the post down after three days.

“I would like to thank the individual who reported this appalling hate crime and I hope this prosecution goes some way in educating and deterring people from posting hate on social media,” Cousins added.

He has now been replaced with James Ward-Prowse in English training. This will be a great improvement for the Southampton man’s week after he scored and was shown a red card in their 3-1 loss to Chelsea.

Kalvin Phillips is not the only Leeds player that will miss international duty with Patrick Bamford unable for selection with an ankle injury. Roma striker Tammy Abraham has been drafted in as a backup to Harry Kane.

Southgate will still have a very strong squad to play in this international break. They will first face Andorra away at 19:45 on Saturday 9th October. Three days later they will play Hungary at 19:45 in Wembley. Both matches will be shown on Sky Sports.

The Three Lions can cope but this may be more trouble for Bielsa and Leeds

Although England will be strong, this injury will be more of a worry to Leeds United fans. The Whites only claimed their first league win of the season on Sunday and are now without some of their starting players.

Marcelo Bielsa was lucky to have a Bamford replacement with Rodrigo able to play the position but he will not have as many choices for Phillips.

Adam Forshaw has spent much of the last two seasons on the injury table and is currently out for two more weeks with a hamstring strain. Northern Irish player, Stuart Dallas is also suffering from a knock.

If Phillips is not right to play, then the team may need to rely on Mateusz Klich to fill in.

Leeds fans should not worry too much presently with the club having a week’s break. Their next match is away to Southampton at 15:00 on Saturday, 16th October.

Warren Gatland’s side displayed an impressive second half in the first test to take the lead in the series but the Springboks showcased why they are reigning world champions with a dominant victory in the second test.

Jacques Nienaber’s world-class defensive coaching kept the Lions at bay and frustrated the touring side that was looking to close out the series early.

Both teams need to win this weekend to win the series, and with the gameplan of the Springboks persevering and the momentum firmly swung in their favour, the Lions will have to put up a fantastic team performance to earn the bragging rights.

Gatland has rolled the dice with his changes, one of them seeing the Pro12-winning ex-Connacht centre partnership of Bundee Aki and Robbie Henshaw play together for the Lions.

Henshaw’s positional flexibility and Aki’s strength could be important factors in a prospective Lions victory.

However, neither are Brian O’Driscoll and the Cape Town showdown may be won via other ways of play.

The Boks’ scrum is the best in the world and the lineout is among the top in its category too.

Whether it be dispersing quickly when out of possession or looking for holes in the South African line with the ball, the set-piece battles will be as important as the first two tests.

Finding even the tiniest of holes in the way these technical aspects of the South African game are set up could prove fatal as the pace of Josh Adams can expose these to great effect.

The Lions will have to improve their aerial abilities too as the Boks have shown that they love to kick in this series.

Henshaw’s ever-presence in the squad throughout the test series is down to several reasons, one of them being his composure under a high ball.

If some more aerial duels went his way and if the backfield can win theirs, the Lions can be a much calmer side in possession.

The Boks are favoured heading into this test but if the Lions play their cards right, they could upset the odds.

Whatever they do, they will want to avoid more heartbreak at the hands of Morné Steyn and the Springboks.

The men’s tournament was scheduled to go ahead alongside the women’s tournament and the wheelchair tournament this Autumn in England.

Ireland had qualified for the men’s tournament and was drawn into Group C with New Zealand, as well as Lebanon and Jamaica.

Australia and New Zealand had said that it is “simply too unsafe” to travel and have further cited player welfare and safety concerns as reasons for their withdrawal.

The RLWC issued a statement on Thursday morning which read: “Rugby League World Cup 2021 (RLWC2021) and the UK Government have today announced their intention to stage the flagship event in the international Rugby League calendar in 2022.

“The extremely difficult decision was taken by the RLWC2021 Board, which includes representation from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, and the International Rugby League (IRL) Board.

“This follows extensive and urgent consultation conducted by RLWC2021 Chief Executive Officer Jon Dutton and his team, which engaged players, competing nations, the Rugby League Players Association (Australia), UK Government, hosts, commercial and broadcast partners.

“Tournament organisers faced several unique and complex challenges with the most significant being the non-release of up to 400 players, match officials and staff members from the NRL competition in Australia. This is despite all requests from international rugby league federations having been met which included the rigorous health measures that have been keeping thousands of elite athletes from around the world safe whilst competing in major sporting events across the UK over the last year.

“Ultimately this decision has been detrimental to the plans and ambitions of many of the competing nations and potential replacement teams. A key factor was ensuring that fans of Rugby League are able to enjoy the best possible tournament, which was not possible under these circumstances.”

Jon Dutton, RLWC2021 Chief Executive Officer, said: “Today is a challenging moment for everyone involved in Rugby League, but most importantly the players and fans of the competing nations.

“Ultimately, time and competing priorities from others forced us to make the most difficult decision in our six-year history. However, we and the sport of Rugby League are resilient, and next year we will deliver our vision of the biggest and best Rugby League World Cup ever.

“We have always prioritised player voice and player choice. We have established a player working group, met with senior players and in the last few days commissioned a player survey to domestic players in Australia and New Zealand that showed more than 85% wanted to compete at RLWC2021 this year.

“However, following the disappointing decision of the ARLC and NZRL to withdraw, and the subsequent impact on player availability for other competing nations, it is apparent that delivering the tournament this year would not be feasible.

“The wellbeing of all those involved in the tournament, particularly players and team officials, has been our priority. I would like to thank the RLWC2021 Board and my team for the relentless hard work and extraordinary measures that had been undertaken to create a safe and secure environment in line with other major sports events that have been successfully hosted in the UK this year.

The two teams, one the holders and another the number one-ranked side in the world, have cited player welfare and safety concerns as reasons for their announcement.

The rise in cases in RLWC host nation England is what has led to this decision.

The RLWC is scheduled to kick off on October 23 with the final to be played on November 27 – both teams were strong favourites to reach it.

The ARLC and NZRL have requested that the competition be postponed until 2022 to minimise the risk of participating players contracting Covid-19.

International Rugby League chairman Troy Grant issued a statement later on Thursday.

“I appreciate Peter calling me to explain the rationale behind the ARLC’s decision and, whilst I can appreciate the ARLC’s intent to ensure player safety and welfare, I find it difficult to find the words that adequately describe my disappointment with that decision,” Grant said.

“Every sporting organisation, every industry, government and family globally have been impacted by this pandemic.

“I have been in regular communication with the RLPA and a number of international players and coaches who have been satisfied with the world cup’s biosecurity arrangements and expressed a clear determination to travel to England and proudly represent their nations. They have expressed to me that they feel their own personal choice to participate or not in the world cup has been taken from them.

“The obvious question being asked of us is why rugby league players are not able to make the same sacrifices as players from other sports? Sadly, players are telling me they haven’t had the opportunity to make that decision for themselves.”

There are 14 teams left in the competition after the announcement, including Ireland and host nation England.

The tournament, hosted by England, is set to begin on Saturday, October 23rd when the hosts face Samoa.

Ireland was drawn into Group C with New Zealand, as well as Lebanon and Jamaica.

Australia and New Zealand have said that it is “simply too unsafe” to travel and have further cited player welfare and safety concerns as reasons.

Both teams were coming into the competition as the top two teams in the world and had automatically qualified after their performances in 2017 and were the two finalists that year.

As the cases continue to rise in England, the two nations have decided not to travel and have also repeated calls for the postponement of the competition until 2022.

The decision to withdraw from the RLW means the Australian Jillaroos and Kiwi Ferns will not participate in the women’s division.

A joint statement from the two nations said: “The Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) and New Zealand Rugby League (NZRL) today informed the International Rugby League (IRL) and Rugby League World Cup (RLWC) organisers that Australia and New Zealand will not compete in a 2021 World Cup because of player welfare and safety concerns.

“The ARLC and NZRL have again requested the RLWC2021 be postponed until 2022 to minimise risk of players contracting COVID-19 and ensure the best outcome for player well-being.

“The ARLC and NZRL have resolved, that in the present environment the risks to athletes and officials travelling to the UK to participate in the tournament this year are too great, and it is unable to endorse Australia and New Zealand participating in the RLWC in 2021.”

NZRL chief executive Greg Peters cited “stark differences” between the management of the pandemic in the UK and Australasia and declared it was “simply too unsafe” for the Southern Hemisphere powerhouses to take part in the tournament.

He said: “The safety and well-being of our people is the main priority, and unfortunately, that cannot be guaranteed to our satisfaction.

“There are stark differences between how the pandemic is being managed in the UK compared to Australasia and recent developments have highlighted how quickly things can change.

“The tournament organisers have moved heaven and earth to make this work, so it is not an easy decision, but the Covid-19 situation in the UK shows no sign of improving, and it’s simply too unsafe to send teams and staff over.

“We understand how disappointing this is for fans and those involved; however player and staff safety remains paramount.”

ARLC chairman Peter V’landys AM reiterated his New Zealand counterpart’s concerns and issued a renewed appeal for the tournament to be rescheduled for next year.

“In the current environment, the risks to the safety, health and well-being of the players and officials travelling from Australia to participate in the tournament this year are insurmountable,” he said.

“The majority of NRL players are currently living away from home under difficult biosecurity protocols. They would then be required to remain under protocols and away from home for the duration of the tournament before again quarantining on return to Australia. This is too much to ask our players and officials to do.

“We have again requested the IRL and Rugby League World Cup consider postponing the event until 2022 to enable all players to participate.”

GK: Gianluigi Donnarumma

The 20-year-old Italian giant has been a revolution since his debut in 2015 at the age of 17 for AC Milan. He is currently a free agent, with reports suggesting he is on his way to French outfit PSG.

Performance-wise Donnarumma has been levels above the Everton keeper at this tournament. Commanding in his box from set-pieces and making crucial saves against Austria and Spain has seen his team reach their first Euro final since 2012.

RB: Kyle Walker

While Giovanni Di Lorenzo has done well this tournament and has laid a claim for a team of the tournament, he falls in comparison to Kyle Walker, who overall, is a much better player at right-back. Boasting pace, an attacking threat and has incredible passing, he has to get into this team. Although his tackling and defensive awareness at times can come into question.

CB: Giorgio Chiellini

At the heart of the Italian defence, the 36-year-old veteran does not play like a player of his age should. Lacking in pace, he makes up for it in experience, leadership and gives the Italian side a presence at the back along with his partner. Never diving into tackles and with a world-class ability to deliver picture-perfect long balls from the back is an underrated attribute the Juventus man has. He is simply a colossus at the back.

CB: Leonardo Bonucci

The Ying to Chiellini’s Yang, Bonucci has been a mainstay in the Italian defence for years. Playing all six matches this tournament, he has shown no signs of slowing down. His technical ability is one of his best attributes, often playing the ball on the ground with great passing.

Along with being strong defensively and a presence for set-pieces, his partnership with Chiellini cannot be questioned.

LB: Luke Shaw

Based on form Luke Shaw is the best left-back in the world, having an exceptional season with Manchester United, he has played every game of the tournament since his exclusion from the opening game against Croatia.

His ability to constantly overlap helps England stretch teams out wide with his pace. He has also contributed to a couple of England’s goals, the Ukraine game in particular, notching up two assists.

Midfield

CDM: Jorginho

The deep-lying midfielder has carried on his late-season from Chelsea with solid performances all throughout the tournament.

Referred to as a ”regista” by many, the Champions League winner has been a stalwart in the Italian defence, attempting 426 passes and completing 399, giving him an incredible return of 93% passing accuracy.

He scored the winning penalty in the Italian’s semi-final win over Spain and is one of the first names on Roberto Mancini’s team sheet.

CM: Marco Verratti

Mancini’s main man for creativity, Verratti’s dribbling and acute ability to progress the ball forward from tight spaces have seen him provide two assists from his four tournament appearances.

One of the best-performing midfielders in the world last season, he is in contention for Player of the Tournament.

CM: Jack Grealish

The Aston Villa captain has been discussed at length this tournament, opinions sway on if his inclusion is warranted with the vast amount of talent at England’s disposal, and if he fits Southgate’s style.

He should be one of the first names on the team sheet and going by his performances in an England shirt when he has been selected, you can see why there has been an outcry from fans.

His professionalism has been one of his greatest feats this tournament, reliable off the bench and opening up defences with his ability to find space from deep. He has provided two assists from four games.

He has to start.

Attack

LM: Raheem Sterling

England’s Player of the Tournament thus far, Sterling has proved many doubters wrong with his performances.

He has played all six matches, scoring three goals and assisting one. Most of his goals have been game-winning goals.

He will be most remembered for his controversial fall in the semi-final against Denmark which saw him win a penalty that saw them make the final on Sunday.

RM: Lorenzo Insigne

On the right flank of the attack is the pacey and skilful Lorenzo Insigne. He has been in tremendous form for Gli Azzurri.

Notching up two goals in five matches, while attempting 14 shots from open play, six of which were on target.

His highlight of the tournament is his wonder-goal versus Belgium in the quarter-final, a goal that is in contention for the goal of the tournament.

ST: Harry Kane

No questions can be asked with Kane’s inclusion. The Tottenham striker is on par if not better than Robert Lewandowski as an out-and-out striker.

Kane is a goal-machine, and after a timid start, has notched up four goals from three games and is in contention to win his second back-to-back Golden Boot at a major tournament.

He could be rewarded his first-ever major team honour on Sunday.

These two last faced each other nine months ago in the UEFA Nations League where Denmark beat England 1-0 away from home.
