All-Ireland champions Dublin will go head to head with Leinster rivals Meath at Croke Park this coming Sunday at 4:30 pm as the second part of a doubleheader in the last of the  Leinster Senior Football Championship semi-finals.

The Dubs shared the title of the league champions with All-Ireland rivals, Kerry, during their league campaign.

Remaining undefeated in all three of the league games, they have not looked their best, but that is expected, even from Dublin.

With numerous retirements from past winners and a couple more on the horizon, this Dublin side is in a transition period from the glory-laden Jim Gavin era.

The Dubs looked less than impressive against Wexford in the quarter-final. Winning by a small margin of 8 points, impressive for Wexford to have kept the score down so low and to not concede a goal.

For Dublin, it will simply be put down to not leaving first gear.

They are still the team to beat and will go on to lift a historic seven-in-a-row later in August.

Meath is their great rivals from the past, not being crowned Leinster champions since 2010, and losing five finals since then, all to Dublin.

The Royal County had a decent league campaign, finishing second only behind a vibrant Mayo side, beating Down and Westmeath in the process.

Losing out on their promotion hopes up to Division 1 with a 3-point losing effort to fellow Leinster semi-finalists Kildare in June.

Beating Longford by a massive 22 point to reach the semi’s, Meath have been the form team this season so far.

They come into this game with a monkey on their back, questions of can they beat Dublin will be put to this squad until they do pull off an upset win.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Not much can be said about Dublin that has not been said already, boasting high-quality talent in all positions, they can beat you from anywhere.

The only weakness you could accuse the Dubs of is the reports of Stephen Cluxton’s future and how that will affect them.

Their opponents have a good team, but mentally how will they respond when Dublin get a goal and start to pull away from them.

If last year’s Leinster final was anything to go by, Meath will fall away and cave to the Dublin storm.

Conclusion

A repeat of last years All-Ireland final is on the cards, picking Meath to pull off a stunning upset is more of hope rather than reality.

If the Dubs come out and play like they usually do, then Meath will want the game to end as soon as possible.

However, I do believe that Meath will do much better than last year.

Kildare will go head to head with Leinster rivals Westmeath at Croke Park this coming Sunday at 2:00 as the first of a doubleheader in the first Leinster Senior Football Championship semi-final.

The lily whites have been impressive this term, topping their Division 2 South group before defeating narrowly defeated Meath in the semi-final, gaining promotion to Divison 1 along with Mayo.

Their only defeat being against Clare, Jack O’Connor has improved his side since his appointment in 2019.

They overcame a strong-willed Offaly side in the quarter-final by a score of 1-15 to 0-13 last week and come into this game as favourites.

Westmeath endured a horrible league run, losing all three games, but playing heroically for the vast majority of those games.

Eventually losing to fellow strugglers Cork in the relegation semi-final, they were relegated down to Division 3 along with the team they faced in the Leinster quarter-finals Laois.

Last year, neither side looked strong enough to challenge Dublin, or at least compete with them.

Meath hammered Kildare in the semi-final, while Westmeath held their own against the Dubs, being eliminated in the quarter-finals.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Jack O’Connor has not put his stamp on his side as of yet, playing a decent style of football throughout the league and looking good going forward.

They do, however, lack something of a clinical nature in their squad, not being able to finish of teams nor having that one standout player to see them through games.

Their opponents on the other hand lack a noticeable style to their game. Throughout the league, and especially in their loss to Mayo they leaned towards playing the long ball into the full-forward line.

If that didn’t work, the players would retreat and look void of ideas.

Conclusion

No matter what, Dublin will beat both sides with relative ease, but out of the two contenders, I can only see Kildare winning this one.

Stronger going forward, a better and experienced manager who is a proven winner. The lily whites should have enough to progress.

Prediction: Kildare by 12 points

Starting Teams

Westmeath: Jason Daly; Jamie Gonoud, Kevin Maguire (captain), Boidu Sayeh; James Dolan, Ronan Wallace, Sam McCartan; Ray Connellan, Sam Duncan; Denis Corroon, Ger Egan, David Lynch; Lorcan Dolan, John Heslin, Ronan O’Toole.

Kildare : Mark Donnellan; Mark Dempsey, Mick O’Grady, Eoin Doyle; Kevin Flynn, David Hyland, Ryan Houlihan; Kevin Feely, Aaron Masterson; Conor Hartley, Fergal Conway, Neil Flynn; Darragh Kirwan, Ben McCormack, Jimmy Hyland.

Dublin GAA legend Cian O’Sullivan announced his retirement from Gaelic football yesterday.

The 33-year-old defender posted a statement on Twitter that listed the reasons for his retirement.

O’Sullivan said that “the competitive demands have taken their toll” on him and that he can no longer continue to play.

“While my heart would love dearly to continue on, my body simply can’t,” the Dublin stalwart conceded.

O’Sullivan leaves behind him a career filled with gold medals and glory.

His personal inter-county haul is up there as one of the best of all time.

His eight All-Ireland medals for Dublin is the joint-best haul ever.

He shares the aforementioned achievement of eight All-Ireland medals with 11 other players in history.

Seven of those players are part of this golden generation of Dublin football.

Stephen Cluxton, Philly McMahon, Michael Fitzsimmons, Kevin McManamon, James McCarthy and Michael Darragh McAuley have all played with O’Sullivan throughout his career with the county.

Three Dublin medals, one Leinster medal and an All-Ireland medal for Kilmacud Crokes only compliments the footballer more.

Comments underneath his statement underlined his legendary status among Gaelic football fans, especially Dublin fans.

One user crowned O’Sullivan, James McCarthy and Jack McCaffrey as the best half-back to ever play the game.

User @SquareAround stated that the Kilmacud Crokes star made the sweeper role his own in his time playing the sport.

Diarmuid Connolly showed his support for his former teammate’s decision with a blue heart.

Former Republic of Ireland footballer Andy Reid also offered words in response to the statement, congratulating O’Sullivan and wishing him well in his next chapter.

User @nigelmcevoy offered his thoughts on the ex-Dublin defender’s greatest game in blue.

He said that the Dublin legend’s second-half performance against Kerry in the 2013 All-Ireland semi-final has to be up there.

The game is seen as one of the best ever Gaelic football matches and Cian O’Sullivan played a massive part in it.

O’Sullivan leaves behind an enviable legacy and will be remembered fondly by everyone who saw him play.

Carlow and Longford will provide the closing game for the Leinster Senior Football Championship preliminary round on Sunday at 4:30 pm.

The game will be held at O’Connor Park and coverage of the game will be on GAAGO.

The two teams have had contrasting seasons so far with Carlow impressing but ultimately falling short in the National Football League Division Four while Longford did the opposite in Division Three.

Carlow impressed in Division Four after their strong displays against Waterford and Wexford, against whom they looked a level above.

However, they looked a level below Division Three-bound Louth in their semi-final tie, missing out on promotion as a result.

Their attack looked sharp in all three games.

The quality of Jamie Clarke, Paul Broderick and Darragh Foley in the final third shone throughout the season and the trio will certainly give the Longford defence problems.

The O’Farrell County had a particularly hard time in their season opener against Derry, conceding 21 points.

Cavan registered more (22) but Longford put up a fight to soften the blow.

Longford looked a class below Derry but had close games with Cavan and Fermanagh, the latter being a draw.

The former fell away from them in the second half but their second-half performance against Tipperary in the relegation showcased their potential.

The Fermanagh game was almost a win for the Slashers but a late equaliser prevented that.

Padraic Davis’ men showed some grit in defence and blew Davy Power’s Munster Champions out of the water (and Division Three).

Rian Brady has starred for them in the final third and will look to continue his good form in the Leinster SFC.

Darren Gallagher’s goalscoring exploits have proved important while the ever-reliable Robbie Smyth has also been a feature in this capable Longford attack.

Considering what they did to Division Three defences this year, it is tough to look past Longford in this tie.

Laois and Wexford will go head to head to find out who gets the second Leinster Semi-Final place in Kilkenny.

Seamus Cheddar Plunketts Laois team endured a terrible league campaign, losing all of their games and finishing bottom.

Wexford on the other hand can take positives from their league run, placing second and only behind Kilkenny by a single point.

Laois will need a massive team performance if they want to progress further into the championship.

Wexford should be too strong for them and after their previous meeting in the league, where Wexford dismantled Laois 4-17 to 0-10. It should be a walk in the park for the Yellowbellies.

Players to watch:

Laois: Ross King

Wexford: Jack O’Connor

Laois – Teams to be confirmed

Enda Rowland; Lee Cleere, Sean Downey, Donnchadh Hartnett; Ronan Broderick, Padraig Delaney, Ryan Mullaney; Fiachra C Fennell, Patrick Purcell; Aaron Dunphy, Willie Dunphy, James Ryan; James Keyes, Ross King, Stephen Maher.

On the 100 year anniversary of Bloody Sunday, the same four teams have made the All-Ireland Football semi-finals after a dramatic day in the GAA. Cavan, Tipperary, Mayo and Dublin all triumphant in their respective provincial Championships.

Ulster SFC Final – Cavan 1-13 Donegal 0-12

Cavan have won the Ulster Championship for the first time in 23 years. Against all odds they beat Donegal in Sunday’s final, retribution after losing last year’s final.

Cavan started the game the stronger of the two, taking a three point lead after the first ten minutes. However, this came to a halt after 12 minutes when Killian Brady was shown a black card and Cavan were down to 14 men. The tide turned in Donegal’s favour and they took a two point lead heading into halftime.

The second half was an even contest, with both sides squandering decent chances. Cavan regained the lead, albeit a very tight lead, right up until the 70th minute with the gap at one point. Then came the decisive goal. Donegal keeper Patton palmed a floating ball straight to Conor Madden who made no mistake and sealed the historic win for his county.

Munster SFC Final – Tipperary 0-17 Cork 0-14

Another final day upset and another win doused in history. Tipperary won their first Munster Championship in 85 years. Yet the win was even more special for Tipp as it came on the anniversary of Bloody Sunday, when one of their owners, Mick Horgan, lost his life in Croke Park.

Despite Cork’s heroic win over Kerry, Tipperary, like Cavan, looked more up for it from the first whistle. After three minutes, the first three points were on the board and belonged to Tipp. Cork fought back with Ian Maguire leading the charge. A brief spell of dominance resulted in them taking the lead. But not for long. Tipp’s Michael Quinlivan put his stamp on the game, inspiring his team to a four point lead at halftime.

Both sides exchanged blows in the second half. Tipperary started the half strong, whilst Cork came back with a flurry of points. However, their efforts were in vain as Tipp held on knowing history was being made.

Leinster SFC Final – Dublin 3-21 Meath 0-9

A dominant display from reigning All-Ireland Champions Dublin who made it 10-in-a-row for Leinster Championships. It was a repeat of last years’ final, as Dublin defeated Meath by 21 points to clinch the trophy and mark the momentous anniversary of Bloody Sunday.

Dean Rock led the scoring for Dublin with 1-7, with all of the attacking line adding their name to the scoresheet. An early point from Meath was not a sign of things to come as the Dubs had the game wrapped up by halftime, leading 2-13 to 0-2.

In a weekend filled with drama, another Championship final upset was not to be as Dublin cruised to victory in the second half. They will face Ulster Champions Cavan in the first of the semi-finals.

Mayo take the fourth semi-final spot after their narrow win over Galway in the Connacht SFC Final last weekend. They will face Munster Champions Tipperary in the second semi-final.

Dublin returned to GAA HQ last weekend and their knowledge of the vast pitch was evident. They ruthlessly put Laois to the sword to continue their quest for a tenth Leinster Championship on the run. Meanwhile, Kildare vs Meath was a far more tightly contested semi-final. But, by the end Meath were comfortable winners after being six-points down at the beginning of the second-half.

Click for live score commentary

A few weeks ago, Dublin vs Meath saw the reigning champions claim a four-point win in the league. On that occasion, Dublin came out on top of a high-scoring encounter. However, Meath showed that they have the tools to hurt Dessie Farrell’s team. Direct runs from deep proved hard for Dublin to deal with and resulted in plenty of frees within scoring distance.

Last weekend, the same direct running style saved the Royals when they looked down against Kildare. Meath managed just four points in the first-half as opposed to Kildare’s eleven. As the sides took the field for the second part of the contest, things were looking desolate for Meath. But, they soon showed the hunger and drive that saw them compete with some of the best in Division 1 of the League.

Jordan Morris and Matthew Costello both found the net just minutes after the restart. The two goals were excellent examples of how hard running and moving the ball quickly can open up defences. That brought the deficit back to a point. Then, when Cillian O’Sullivan scored Meath’s third goal in the 45th minute after a turnover high up the pitch, Meath never looked back. Joey Wallace and Jason Scully added two more majors before full time. This came just a week after they netted seven against Wicklow.

On the other hand, it was just the two goals for Dublin as they swatted aside the challenge of Laois. The Dubs don’t need goals in the same way other teams do though as their 23 points would have likely been enough to win a game in itself.

In truth, Dublin were slow to get going as uncharacteristic errors peppered the first quarter. For example, Paddy Small hit a hat-trick of wides, James McCarthy was dispossessed twice, and Cluxton sent a kick-out over the sideline. Then, they found their rhythm and Sean Bugler’s 24th minute goal justified his continued selection at wing-forward.

Likewise, Ciarán Kilkenny continues to perform at the top of his game. A personal 1-4 tally looked effortless. Brian Fenton looked as dangerous as ever. He scored four points that could have easily included a goal. Furthermore, Cormac Costello stole the headlines despite only playing 25 minutes. Seven points from him is surely enough for Dessie Farrell to finally consider putting Costello in from the start. However, Costello could be his own worst enemy by proving himself as an impact sub over and over again.

Meath may have the tools to threaten Dublin but there’s little doubt they will need to continue their goal-scoring run to do so. 12 goals in 2 games is a promising trend to carry into such an encounter, but they need to be equally as tigerish in defence. Farrell won’t underestimate Andy McEntee’s team and his instructions will be for his players to come out firing. The first 20 minutes of this game will be played at breakneck speed. The other fifty will give us a demonstration of the gap between Dublin and the chasing Leinster pack.

The Royal County last won Leinster in 2010 after that controversial final against Louth. Since then, they have lost to Dublin in four finals.

The Leinster Final is live on RTÉ on Saturday.

Dublin are 1/20 with Paddy Power. Meath are 9/1 and a draw is 25/1.

Prediction: Dublin.
