Leuven: Malaysian Goh Jin Wei remained perfect in Belgian International finals, playing just enough to see off second seed Kirsty Gilmour of Scotland in straight sets to claim her first international title on Saturday.
A stellar performance from the 15-year-old Goh saw her dispatched Gilmour to lift the women’s singles title in 44 minutes. Goh got off to a slow start in the first set, where she was trailing 4-8 at one point. Goh then stormed back after a slow start to tie the score at 8-8, 9-9 and 10-10. From then on, the momentum has shifted in Goh’s favor. She kept edging ahead before closing out the first set 21-15.
Despite another slow start in the second set, Goh shrugged off a 5-9 deficit, hitting back to level the score at 9-9. The pair then went back and forth in the second set, tying the score several times at 11-11, 13-13, 15-15, 16-16, 18-18 before Goh reeled off the next three points to clinch her maiden international title.
Malaysian women’s doubles pair Joyce Choong Wai Chi/Yap Cheng Wen couldn’t bring double joy to the Malaysia camp when they fell 18-21, 11-21 to Maiken Fruergaard/Sara Thygesen of Denmark in the final.
Robert Mateusiak/ Nadiezda Zieba of Poland fought off Jonatan Nordh/Emelie Fabbeke of Sweden to capture the three-set mixed doubles final match 15-21, 21-6, 21-8 in 54 minutes.
In men’s singles final, Anders Antonsen of Denmark got the better compatriot Christian Lind Thomsen 21-18, 21-17 to claim the Belgian International title in 58 minutes.
Saturday’s men’s doubles title will be decided between top seed Manu Attri/B. Sumeeth Reddy of India and Adam Cwalina/Przemyslaw Wacha of Poland.
