Mulheim: Denmark’s top-seeded European champion Jan Jorgensen needed only 31 minutes to defeat Indonesian Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka 21-12, 21-13 in the men’s singles final on Sunday to become the first Denmark player to have ever won the German Open title.
On the contrary, South Korean Sung Ji Hyun fought tooth and nail to get back to the game when Carolina Marin of Spain was able to force a decider. Nonetheless, Carolina Marin was clearly running out of steam in the decider as Sung Ji Hyun finally came out on top 21-15,14-21,21-6 in the three-set match that lasted 68 minutes.
Meanwhile, the fairytale run came to an end for Indonesian women’s doubles pair Della Destiara Haris/Rosyita Eka Putri Sari when they lost to second seeds Christinna Pedersen/Kamilla Rytter Juhl of Denmark 18-21, 21-17, 9-21 in 59 minutes.
Mads Conrad-Petersen/Mads Pieler Kolding of Denmark beat Russian pair Vladimir Ivanov/Ivan Sozonov 22-20, 21-19 for the men’s doubles title, and Mads Pieler Kolding/Kamilla Rytter Juhl of Denmark prevailed over compatriots Joachim Fischer Nielsen/Christinna Pedersen to take home the mixed doubles title.
