Australia Open: Three Malaysian pairs march into quarter finals

Sydney: Malaysia’s scratch pair Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong continued their impressive run at the Australian Open badminton championships to stun sixth seeds Markis Kido-Gideon Markus Fernaldi of Indonesia 19-21, 21-11, 21-12 in 33 minutes to reach the quarter-finals in Sydney on Thursday. The Korean who won Japan Open two weeks ago and Indonesia Open last week overcame a tight match against Hirokatsu Hashimoto-Noriyasu Hirata of Japan 21-18, 20-22, 21-12 in the second round.

 

Former world junior champions Tan Boon Heong-Hoon Thien How defeated fellow countrymen Lim Khim Wah/Ow Yao Han 21-18, 21-14 to face off against Chinese pair Cai Yun/Lu Kai in the next round.

Chan Peng Soon/Lai Pei Jing found little resistance in second round as the Malaysian pair wrapped up victory against Phillip Chew/Jamie Subandhi of USA 21-17, 21-11 in 29 minutes. Chan/Lai will meet Thailand’s number one pair Sudket Prapakamol/Saralee Thoungthongkam tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Malaysia’s professional men’s doubles pair Chan Kwong Beng/Chiang Jiann Shiarng lost to China’s Xiaolong Liu/Zihan Qiu 9-21, 10-21 in straight sets.
