Ng Tze Yong Enters Commonwealth Games Final, Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik Win Bronze

Birmingham: After beating former World No. 1 Kidambi Srikanth in the Commonwealth Games mixed team final 21-19, 6-21, 21-16 on August 2, 2022, Malaysia’s World No. 42 Ng Tze Yong pulled off another strong showing in the Commonwealth Games men’s singles semi-finals to down the World No. 13 Srikanth 13-21, 21-19, 21-10 on Sunday.

Ng is set to play another Indian player – World No. 10 Lakshya Sen in the final.

In the men’s doubles semi-finals, both Malaysian men’s pairs were stranded in the last four after World No. 6 Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik’s head-to-head 3-0 winning streak over World No. 19 Ben Lane/Sean Vendy of England was ended by the British pair when Lane/Vendy turned on their relentless attacks to beat Chia/Soh 18-21, 21-17, 21-4.

Lane/Vendy are set to play World No. 7 Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty of India in the final.

After their respective defeats in the semi-finals, Chia/Soh and Chan Peng Soon/Tan Kian Meng set up an all-Malaysian bronze medal match, where Chia/Soh ultimately won themselves a consolation prize by beating Chan/Tan 21-19, 11-21, 21-11 for the bronze.

In women’s doubles, Pearly Tan/Thinaah Muralitharan of Malaysia kept everything in perspective to outlast Jolly Treesa/Pullela Gayatri Gopichand 21-13, 21-16 in the semi-finals to set up a gold medal clash with Chloe Birch/Lauren Smith of England.

Earlier Sunday, World No. 11 mixed pair Tan Kian Meng/Lai Pei Jing lost 23-25, 18-21 to Terry Hee/Tan Wei Han of Singapore in the semi-final, but was able to overcome Adam Hall/Julie Macpherson of Scotland 21-15, 21-17 to win the bronze.

The women’s singles final will be carried out by World No. 13 Michelle Li of Canada and World No. 7 PV Sindhu of India. Sindhu enjoyed an 8-2 career head-to-head record against Li prior to Monday’s final.
