Singapore: While most badminton or tennis players usually smash their rackets during matches due to frustration or for losing their temper due to a variety of reasons, Indonesia’s World No. 6 Anthony Ginting Sinisuka of Indonesia who has been struggling and failed to win a tournament title in the last 2.5 years, smashed his racket on the floor in celebration of winning the 2022 Singapore Open on Sunday.
Clinching the Singapore Open was obviously a huge relief for him after coming up short in many tournaments since winning the 2020 Indonesia Masters.
Facing the World No. 43 Kodai Naraoka on Sunday was not an easy task for the Indonesian despite their huge gap in world rankings.
Naraoka was very proactive, and strong in defense, together with his rich offensive skills, allowing him to lead at 20-19, 21-20 in the first game before Ginting held his nerves to turn the table by taking the first game 23-21.
The second game was also equally tough as the first one, but Ginting managed to pull away after 16-16 to ultimately come out on top.
“This is one of the best moments of my career because my results in the last few months were not good,” said Ginting.
“Really grateful for the trust from the coach, PBSI, friends, and family who has been supporting me. I dedicate this to all of you,” added Ginting.
In addition to men’s singles, the Indonesian team also picked up both the men’s doubles and the women’s doubles title.
The World No. 23 Leo Rolly Carnando/Daniel Marthin achieved a breakthrough on Sunday by winning the highest level tournament of their career, Singapore Open – a Super 500 event by beating compatriots and last week’s Malaysia Masters champions – Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto 9-21, 21-14, 21-16.
For Alfian/Ardianto who have reached the final for the seventh time in their 11th event so far this year, it was a good final for them even though they failed to claim their fourth title of 2022 after winning the Indonesia Masters, Malaysia Masters, and the Swiss Open.
Meanwhile, Apriyani Rahayu/Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti of Indonesia who paired together merely three months ago picked up their third title as a pair when they beat Zhang Shu Xian/Zheng Yu of China 21-14, 21-17 in the Singapore Open final. Prior to the Singapore Open final, both had met in Malaysia Open final two weeks ago, at that time, Rahayu/Ramadhanti were forced to work hard to beat Zhang/Zheng 21-18, 12-21, 21-19.
