Muelheim: China’s World No. 9 women’s singles player – He Bing Jiao produced some epic defense at match-point of the German Open women’s singles final against compatriot – the Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Chen Yufei, seeing off the World No. 3 Chen 21-14, 27-25 in 61 minutes.

This was He Bing Jiao’s first international title since winning the 2019 Korea Open by defeating Ratchanok Intanon of Korea 18–21, 24–22, 21–17.

Interestingly, the last time He managed to beat Chen was also in the 2019 Korea Open quarter-finals, where she won 15-21, 21-17, 21-18. Chen then won their next three encounters at international tournaments. Sunday’s victory gave He Bing Jiao a 5-3 career meeting advantage against Chen.

In the nail-biting women’s doubles final, when China’s 2017, 2021 World champions Chen Qing Chen/Jia Yi Fan and the 2018, 2021 European champions Gabriela Stoeva/Stefani Stoeva of Bulgaria were pushing each other to the limit.

Chen/Jia took the first game 21-16. But the Stoeva sisters held their nerves, stretched the second game to the ‘sudden death’ deciding point at 29-29 to win the second game 30-29.

Trailed by 7-13, the Chinese pair however wasn’t giving up until the match was over as they staged a remarkable comeback in the decider to beat the Stoeva sisters 21-19.
