Jakarta: Greysia Polii and Apriyani Rahayu who won Indonesia’s only gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics, will be rewarded with a 5 billion rupiah (USD $349,000) cash prize by the government. This was a stunning sum in a country where the gross national income of Indonesia was $11,750 in 2020.
1. Cash
In addition to the price money reward from the government, the pair will also receive another Rp. 500 million (USD $34615.25) bonus money from the private sectors in Indonesia.
2. Cows
The district head in Rahayu’s hometown on Sulawesi island also promised to give her five cows and a house.
3. Houses/Apartments
Polii will also receive a house located in her hometown as well.
Each of them will also be receiving another luxury apartment located in North Jakarta.
4. Vacation Packages
As reported by Kompas.com, Indonesia’s Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy – Sandiaga Uno, also promised to send Polii and Rahayu to the following vacation destinations for free:
a. Lake Toba in North Sumatra
b. Likupang in North Sulawesi
c. Mandalika in West Nusa Tenggara
d. Borobudur in Central Java
e. Labuan Bajo in East Nusa Tenggara
5. Business packages
Meanwhile, the meatball restaurant chain Baso Aci Abang promised to a store to each of the gold medalists. Another restaurant chain, Esteh Indonesia Outlet also wanted to show their appreciation for Polii & Rahayu’s hard work by giving each of them an Esteh Indonesia Outlet store.
Polii/Rahayu continued Indonesia’s tradition by winning at least a gold medal in each Olympics. Since badminton was introduced in the 1992 Barcelona Games, Indonesia has won one gold medal in badminton at every Olympics except the London 2012 Games.
