Jakarta: The Badminton Association of Indonesia or PBSI has officially pulled World No. 5 men’s singles player – Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, World No. 6 women’s doubles pair – Greysia Polii/Apriyani Rahayu, and World No. 4 mixed doubles pair – Praveen Jordan/Melati Daeva Oktavianti from the Swiss Open tournament which will be held from March 2, 2021, to March 7, 2021, in Basel, Switzerland.
Nevertheless, these players will be playing at the German Open that will be held in Mülheim, Germany, from March 9, 2021, to March 14, 2021, and three factors that were taken into account in PBSI’s decision-making process.
First, they hoped these players would better prepared to achieve good results at the All England Championships which will be held three days after the German Open final, from March 17 to March 21 in Birmingham, England.
Secondly, PBSI was concerned about the performance of these players, especially in the previous three back-to-back Asian Leg tournaments in Thailand. In those three tournaments, Indonesia only won one title at the Yonex Thailand Open through Greysia Polii/Apriyani Rahayu.
Lastly, although the Swiss Open does offer Olympic qualifying points, the absence of these players would not affect their Olympic qualification. They are currently in good places at the BWF Race to Tokyo rankings as Anthony Sinisuka Ginting is ranked No. 5, Greysia Polii/Apriyani Rahayu ranked No. 7, and Praveen Jordan/Melati Daeva Oktavianti ranked No. 5 in their disciplines respectively.
