Copenhagen: The 32-year-old Jan Jorgensen announced on Tuesday at his Instagram that he is retiring from professional badminton.

Jorgensen wrote on his Instagram saying: “Last day at the national centre tomorrow – hopefully one left in october to end it all. Looking forward to a new chapter. BIG thank you to all the people involved over the years. Thank you for watching🙏”.

This also meant that Jorgensen has officially ended his training with the Danish national team on Wednesday. He has been with the Denmark national team for 12 years, reached a career-high of World No. 2 on 22, January 2015.

However, Jorgensen is not retiring immediately, he was hoping he could be part of the Denmark Thomas Cup team when the prestigious men’s team event set to kick off in Aarhus, Denmark, from October 3 to October 11. Of course, the criterion for playing in the Thomas Cup finals would be to earn a call up to the Denmark national team.

Regardless, Jorgensen will be bidding farewell to badminton fans around the world at the 2020 Denmark Open that will be held in Odense, Denmark, from Oct 13 to Oct 18.

Jorgensen who will celebrate his 33rd birthday on December 31 this year, had been playing in the same era as Malaysian badminton legend Lee Chong Wei, and Chinese badminton superstar, Lin Dan.

Nevertheless, he was plagued by injuries in recent years. Although he attempted to make a comeback and to return to the peak, his performance over the past three years showed that it’s hard for him to regain his past form.

According to German media, after leaving the Denmark national team, Jorgensen would be moving to Germany with the wife who is a handball player.
