Shi Yuqi enters Macau Open quarters, Son Wan Ho crashes out

Macau: China’s World No. 6 Shi Yuqi who suffered a horrible ankle injury in the quarterfinal of 2019 Indonesia Open in July, defeated teammate Ren Peng Bo 21-19, 21-18 to advance to the Macau Open quarter-final on Thursday at the Tap Seac Multi-Sports Pavilion.

After his injury at the Indonesia Open, Shi has pulled out of three BWF Super World Tour 750 events, including Japan Open, Denmark Open, French Open in addition to the World Championships. Shi made a quick comeback at the China Open in September, but was blown away by teammate Lu Guangzu in the first round in just 15 minutes.

Shi was actually almost eliminated in the Macau Open first round two days ago, as he had to dig deep to save 3 match points against Lucas Claerbout of France, before escaping 16-21, 26-24, 21-11. Shi will face compatriot Zhao Jun Peng next.

Meanwhile, Korea’s World No. 21 Son Wan Ho who ruptured his left Achilles tendon in March and made his first comeback since the injury, was outlasted by China’s 2016 World Junior champion Sun Feixiang, going down 10-21, 17-21 in 44 minutes. Sun will play Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo of Indonesia on Friday.

In men’s doubles, No. 6 seeds Goh Sze Fei/Nur Izzuddin of Malaysia were able to recover from losing the second set, seeing off Na Sung Seung/Wang Chan of Korea 21-17, 21-23, 21-17 to set up a quarter-final match up against No. 4 seeds Lu Ching Yao/Yang Po Han of Taiwan.

Meanwhile, Malaysia’s mixed doubles pair, Hoo Pang Ron/Cheah Yee See overcame Yonny Chung/Ng Shiu Yee of Hong Kong 21-15, 21-9 to set up a quarter-final match against Lin Yong Sheng/Lin Wan Ching of Taiwan in the last eight.
