Muelheim: The current World No. 12, Lin Dan has bid an early farewell to the 2019 German Open after losing to Denmark’s Hans-Kristian Solberg Vittinghus 16-21, 21-19, 21-13 in a 76-minute battle on Thursday.
Vittinghus took to his social media page to express his joy and happiness following the win over Lin Dan.
“I admit it. Beating Lin Dan made me pretty excited! 😃”
The Danish player will play Malaysia’s Soong Joo Ven in the quarter-finals.
Soong was made to work by Lu Chia Hung before seeing off the Taiwanese player 21-16, 10-21, 21-13 in 52 minutes.
On the other hand, Malaysia’s another men’s singles shuttler, Lee Zii Jia managed to pull off an upset to down No. 5 seed Angus Ng Ka Long of Hong Kong 21-19, 12-21, 21-16 in 52 minutes to set up a last eight encounter with No. 2 seed Chou Tien Chen of Taiwan.
In men’s doubles, Malaysia has three pairs advanced to the quarter-finals. Unseeded pair Goh Sze Fei/Nur Izzuddin continued their superb performance by outlasting No. 3 seeds Han Chengkai/Zhou Haodong of China 21-16, 17-21, 21-16 in 53 minutes. They will take on compatriots and No. 8 seeds Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik on Friday.
Meanwhile, Ong Yew Sin/Teo Ee Yi fended off a late surge by Mark Lamsfuss/Marvin Seidel of Germany to win 21-12, 23-21. Ong/Teo will meet No. 2 seeds Hiroyuki Endo/Yuta Watanabe of Japan next.
The women’s singles competition saw Malaysia’s Goh Jin Wei saved a match point to overturn Korea’s Kim Ga Eun 10-21, 21-12, 23-21 to play No. 4 seed Zhang Beiwen of USA in the quarter-finals.
