Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia’s badminton legend, Lee Chong Wei has officially made his return to the badminton court as he started training at the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) on Monday after battling nose cancer last year.

He told reporters that the badminton court seemed to be bigger than normal after he took six-months off from the sport for cancer treatment.

Lee spent more than an hour for his routine training early Monday morning, then spent another two hours at the gym for physical workout.

“It’s been a long time, around 5 to 6 months, I can feel it’s a little bit different. As for me, I am fine, and I can only do some light training right now to help me get back the feeling on the court. The doctors advised me to train with only 30% intensity instead of 100%. The court feels kind of bigger, “said Lee jokingly.

“Of course, I need more time to resume my normal training. If I don’t feel comfortable, I will take a break,” said Lee.

Lee also stressed that strengthening his physical fitness would be his top priority.

“I am not worry about my skills. The most important thing now is to restore my health and physical strength. In the past few months, I’ve lost my muscle strength, so I need to rebuild my muscles. However, I must also be cautious because I don’t want to get hurt. I can’t work too hard, so I plan to train three or four times a week,” added Lee.

Meanwhile, Lee Chong Wei’s coach Hendrawan appeared to be keeping an upbeat attitude as he was supervising Lee during the training.

“Chong Wei still has the skills, but since he has not been training for few months, it’ll take him some time to return to his previous form,” said Hendrawan.
