Chennai: In the mixed doubles match which would have decided the outcome of the tie between defending champions Chennai Smashers and Delhi Dashers in the 2017/2018 Premier Badminton League (PBL) held at the Babu Banarasi Das U.P. Badminton Academy in Lucknow on Wednesday, World No. 5 mixed doubles pair Chris and Gabrielle Adcock have to retire after Gabrielle twisted her ankle while returning a shot.

Playing in the Trump match for Chennai Smashers, the husband and wife pair were trailing 5-6 in the match against Delhi Dashers pair of Ashwini Ponnappa and Vladimir Ivanov. Gabrielle was trying to return the shuttle from Ashwini at the left side of the court when that the unfortunate incident took place as she tripped on her husband’s foot and rolled her left ankle.

Based on the video footage, the injury didn’t look good for the 27-year-old as she was grimacing in pain. The Chennai team had to concede the match and the tie as well to Delhi Dashers after such an unfortunate fashion.

Gabrielle Adcock posted on her social media page Saturday stating she would not be able to compete in the rest of the 2017-2018 PBL season. She is also expected to miss the beginning of the 2018 Badminton World Federation (BWF) season after suffering the ankle injury.
