Tokyo: Six-time Japan Open champion Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia reached the 2017 Japan Open quarter-final with a straight-set win over Indonesia’s Tommy Sugiarto on Thursday.

The 35-year-old, who is bidding for his seventh Japan Open title, recorded a 22-20, 21-17 victory in 47 minutes.

Lee will now play Taiwan’s No. 4 seed Chou Tien Chen on Friday.

The No. 7 seed Lin Dan of China beat qualifier Lee Dong Keun of Korea 21-12, 21-17 to set up a quarter-final against world number one South Korean Son Wan-Ho.

Malaysia’s young men’s doubles pair Ong Yew Sin/Teo Ee Yi that will soon be split up to try their new partnerships with Rio Olympic silver medalists Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong, stunned No. 8 seeds Lee Jhe-Huei-Lee Yang of Taiwan with a 21-18, 21-12 straight-set victory. Ong/Teo will play Takuto Inoue/Yuki Kaneko of Japan next.

The 2016 All England champions Vladimir Ivanov/Ivan Sozonov of Russia continued to bring reigning World champion Liu Cheng/Zhang Nan more misery of late, as the Russian pair upset the No. 7 seeds from China 21-18, 15-21, 24-22 in 62 minutes.
