Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia national team men’s singles head coach Misbun Sidek has urged all parties to give him more time and space to rejuvenate and to restore the confidence of the Malaysian men’s singles team, as he also looking to resurrect Lee Chong Wei’s career.
Lee Chong Wei suffered one of the most staggering defeats in the history of the BWF World Championships after being beaten by Frenchman, Brice Leverdez in the first round of the prestigious tournament three weeks ago.
“Give me some time to work on the men’s singles squad. We need to have stronger training, players from other countries are doing the same,” said Sidek.
“If players have the will to be the best, I am convinced they can continue to improve their games,” added Sidek.
When asked about what had happened to Lee Chong Wei at the World Championships in Glasgow, Sidek clarified that’s not because of Lee’s playing style.
“He was confused because it’s been six years since I last coached him, and during that period, he had gone through many different coaches.”
“I only joined the team five weeks before the World Championships, I can only tell him where he should pay more attention.”
“Chong Wei was confused about the suggestions and advices when he played, and I won’t blame him.”
Misbun said he will continue to assist Lee in the upcoming tournaments by applying the training that suits Lee’s age.
“Right now, he is often the main target from other players, and they are not afraid of him.”
“His age has grown and there has been a change in speed and attack. Chong Wei is aware of this and we will help him to improve his technique from time to time.”
Misbun Sidek left Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) almost seven years ago, and has returned to BAM as men’s singles head coach in early July of 2017.
